Long after the events of Desiree 1519, we find Theo an English Captain in the Natal province of South Africa before the Second Boer War is about to break out. Vala Sunderland, the mysterious English/Indian horsewoman he met at Blackheath Manor in London, is still his mistress. He owns the sugar plantation where she was raised and her husband Cormack is the Surveyor of Natal. Theo convinces her to take him across the Vaal River into the Transvaal and help him find gold. 


In the Witwatersrand he finds the gold he was looking for and they go to Pretoria to register their claim with Boers, led by Louis Botha. At a shooting match, Theo meets Lizzie, a Dutch orphan girl promised to Louis, who stamps his claim with the old seal of the Dutch East India Company, VOC. When they return to Natal, Vala tells Theo she knows he’s in love with Lizzie, and returns to her husband Cormack, despite Theo’s promise never to cross the Vaal again. 


When a ship arrives in Natal from India with new contract laborers to replace the plantation workers whose contracts have expired, Harish Chandra, an Indian lawyer is among them. Harish is headed for Pretoria to go to work for the Indian Trading Company. But on the ship, Harish has fallen in love with a girl under contract to Theo, who Theo renames Vala. 


On a trip to Cape Town to meet with Cecil Rhodes, Theo tells him at the Observatory that the Witwatersrand is one of the two great meteor impacts on Earth. Cecil becomes convinced the English must get control of the Transvaal, ordering Theo to go back across the Vaal, much to Theo’s dismay, to negotiate with Louis and the English Rand Lords in Johannesburg. 


Theo meets Lizzie again at the Boer camp and they go off together into the Witwatersrand, but she gives him only a kiss and when they return she tells him Louis will never submit to Cecil, war is coming and she and Theo will be on opposite sides. Theo convinces Harish to return to Natal with him. Harish is a pacifist but agrees to lead an ambulance crew for the English. 


Louis and the Boers use their skills to defeat Theo and the English, even though the English positioned themselves on a hilltop. After Theo and the others are ransomed by Cecil, he returns to his Natal plantation, promising again never to cross the Vaal. But the English don’t give up, they capture the Boer women and children and imprison them in a concentration camp to pressure Louis to surrender. Theo learns from Harish that Lizzie is in the camp, being treated worse than any, because she’s promised to Louis. Theo has to decide again whether to break his promise not to cross the Vaal.
